MEDIA RELEASE 27 JUNE 2008

AUTISM LEADER ACCUSES THE PREMIER AND HIS ADVISER OF SLANDERING A LEADING AUTISM EXPERT DURING THE BUDGET ESTIMATES.

Roger Law,  Secretary of Action for Tasmanian Autistic Children, said today that the Premier and Education Minister, Mr Bartlett, and his advisor, Lynne James, had slandered one of the world's leading experts on the treatment of children with Autism during the budget estimates committee on Monday 23 June 2008.

M/S James stated in a reply to a question from Mrs Napier, 'The person you are talking about has had 12 months of the Lovaas Method. One component of the Lovaas Method is that it uses adversives, and that is not something we use within our system. We do not physically punish children to educate them.

Mr Bartlett then said, "Yes, it does have physical punishment in it." He repeated this claim a few seconds later.

"These statements are completely fallacious and are a deliberate slander against the firm that carried out the programme, the workers in the programme, and the mother of the child concerned," Mr Law said. "He must immediately remove M/S James from her position and place her somewhere where her biased and erroneous attitudes can no longer harm children with autism."

Mr Law said that there appears to be no communication between the Premier and his Deputy, the Minster for Health. M/S Giddings would have been able to inform him that these same allegations were made three years ago when the same firm was hired by Child and Family Services to carry out a programme for a child in care. These allegations were referred to the Ethics Committee of the Department of Health, and were thoroughly investigated. They were found to be false, and that programme continues very successfully today.

On top of this, he has caused unnecessary stress to a seriously ill mother who is already depressed at having services taken away from her autistic son!

"IS IT CARING AND CLEVER to lie and slander in this manner?" Mr Law asked. "Mr Bartlett must immediately apologise for his completely false and damaging statements."
